Rod control is a very important part of square bill fishing. You want to be able to retrieve your bait deeper or shallower by moving your rod tip up or down, and changing the direction of your bait will also trigger strikes and this is done by simply moving your rod tip from one side to the other. At this point you must be thinking “duh”, but the thing is you want your crank to be changing direction and diving in between holes and gaps, so always be conscious of the cover you fishing as you want to use as much of the deflection as possible.
It’s like driving a remote control car through an obstacle course if that makes any sense?
My colours of choices are based on time of year, body of water, and clarity of water aswell as the local bait fish population.
I have a collection of colors that have all caught fish but a few stand out for me like the Bluegill, chartreuse black back and blue back, tilapia imitations, ghost and craw colors.
I currently fish two brands of squarebills. The XB-1 from Xcite Baits, the Crush 50x, and Crush Flat 75x from 6th sense lures. These two brands offer a great product with great fish catching colors.
Squarebill fishing is not difficult at all, you just need to apply yourself, trust in the bait, and your equipment. Fishing in general is not rocket science we as bass anglers just over complicate things.
See you on the water soon.
