UPGRADE TIME!

25th Jan 2014, I was staying at city lodge for the weekend, a trip my girlfriend won. I left at 4:30am and made my way to Hazelmere where I lost a lunker a few weeks earlier. Around 7:30am the wind picked up to a gale, so my weightless rod I hooked my last beast on had to take a back seat to a texas rigged set up I hardly use. I was throwing senko's as that seemed to be doing the trick. Had a few decent fish but was looking for my standard 1 to 1.5kg fish I usually get on every outing. Finally a nice fish of 1.48kgs. The wind was with me on the way back to the car, and I saw a few friends coming towards me. That's when it happened again, I didn't shout or scream, I didn't want to jinx anything. I set the hook and went for a ride, she took one jump after the strike, and then went for deeper water, knew straight away it was a PB. Kept as calm as possible that one could be in that situation, I loosened my drag, and even free spooled with my thumb pressure when it ran. Finally I lip landed her, my hook just caught in the side of the mouth, and alerted my fellow anglers with the biggest smile ever.

After stumbling to get my scale and almost dropping the fish, my digital scale flickered between 3.70 and 3.71kgs, a couple pictures, and then she was able to wriggle out of my grip, and back into the depths. Happy was an understatement!
