Equipment
When it comes to equipment, I suggest a solid rod for any Jig fisherman, a good reel and decent line. Now each angler has his own brand preference so you need to look for a rod over the 7 foot range. Most brands will have technique specific rods so just look for their Jig or Flippin and Pitchin rods. When it comes to reels, you want some horse power to get the fish out of the thick stuff quickly, so look for reels in the 7.2:1 retrieve range. Line is very important and with braid, fishing the thick stuff has become a lot easier. When fishing stained or dirty coloured water, you can tie directly to the jig. However when fishing cleaner water, the use a fluorocarbon leader of at least 16lbs up to 25lbs and 20lbs being a happy medium to make your presentation less visible is advisable. When fishing straight fluorocarbon don’t settle for anything less than 16lbs brands like Sunline, Seaguar and Gary Yamamoto Sugoi have given me great results over the years and are great brands.
Jig fishing is trial and error like most things, but be prepared to lose a few to sharpen your skills. The more you fish it, the more proficient you will become with it. The bottom line is Bass love Jigs especially big bass, so why not try them and hang on!!!!
Catch you on the water soon.
