D O V E T A I L . B Y P E T E R C A R D E W Throughout his years practicing
architecture in Vancouver Canada Peter Cardew has built an international
reputation for innovation and quality, both in buildings and for the furniture
that he has designed to inhabit those buildings. ¶ He approaches all design
with the same rigourous logic that he employs in his architecture believing
that design excellence is achieved through the exploration of function and an
understanding of materials and craftsmanship to transform an inert material
into an appropriate and meaningful object. ¶ Peter’s work has been exhibited
internationally and he has lectured throughout the world. In 2012 Peter received
the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal, awarded annually to an
individual in recognition for outstanding services to architecture. ¶ One of the
earliest woodworking joints pre-dating written history, the dovetail has been
found in the tombs of the First Dynasty of Ancient Egypt and the tombs of
Chinese emperors where longevity and beauty were paramount. Unsurpassed
throughout history as the most effective woodworking joint in the crafting
of wooden furniture the Dovetail in this contemporary application exhibits a
timeless lucidity in form, material and structure within which the functional
beauty of the dovetail is quietly celebrated.
