16. Alfred Diston lived in Tenerife between 1810 y 1861.Why is
he famous? What did he do?
Diston (1793-1861), an Englishman living in Tenerife, represented and
directed for years the company Pasley, Little y Co., in Puerto de la Cruz.
He makes trips to several of the islands of the Archipelago, trips that are
reflected in his diaries and albums, carrying out an extraordinary pictorial
and documentary work of the popular and scenic reality of Tenerife and
the Canary Islands. In his watercolors, gouaches and charcoals, the
traditional Canarian dress of the different places, periods, such as holiday
costumes, walking, to go to the church, is reflected; that reflect the way
of life of these people, as well as plants, flowers, rocks, etc. A small part
of the work done, throughout his stay in the Islands, is included in the first
edition of the manuscript "Costumes of the Canary Islands", published in
London by Smith, Elder and Co. in 1829.
