Have you ever wondered who has been a part of all fundraisers and events for Barkalow, or who has helped us make some students dreams come true? That’s right, if you were guessing Barkalow’s impeccable Student Council, then you are correct.
“A Student Council is a representative structure for students only, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students,” as the Student Council Support website says. Student Council is an organization in which students learn and become leaders to their peers, and help out at local fundraisers and events. Student Council plays an important role in our school.
Who runs our events and raises money? Without Student Council many events and ideas that can be put into reality, wouldn’t happen. For example, “Barkalow’s Got Talent” an organization where we have students audition with their talents, and those who pass will get to perform their acts to the whole school.
We also raise money by hosting the 7th and 8th grade car washes, where 6th, 7th and 8th grade students get to wash cars, and all of the money that is raised goes towards graduation tee-shirts for the 7th and 8th grade students. Also, if you join the car washes, you will get free pizza.
We will also held our 1st annual Pumpkin Painting Party. The students had painted a Halloween picture on their pumpkins, and at the end, the student’s pumpkins were judged and the pumpkin that won, was Megan Cheng’s with her Olaf pumpkin.
Want to join Student Council? Great! What you need to do is first go to the Student Council Interest Meeting to see if you are interested. Next, you write a paragraph stating why you should be a student council member and why you make a great leader for the school.
Most people that qualify will get in and will be a member, only under strict policies: If you miss three meetings, without a doctor’s note or a family emergency, you will be asked to leave Student Council. Also, you must show what type of a role model you are both in and out of school, or you could lose your once-in-a-lifetime experience in Student Council. Remember that you are the role models of the school, and also the voices that read the announcements to your assigned homeroom class, and come up with ideas for fundraisers and events.
What are our meetings like? Well, to answer this question we start off Student Council meetings by reading the agenda given to us, and discussing our topics, to see if we have any suggestions or ideas as well. Next, we flip to our minutes, which are detailed summaries of who said what and any suggestions they have. If it is correct, then we pass them. If there is a spelling mistake, or incorrect sentence, we fix them and then pass the minutes. Then (my favorite part), is Open Floor, where we discuss new school events and add onto the older events, to improve them every year. If we also have any events or ideas that we can share to the school, we will share them during this time to see if we can make it happen, and it is approved from Mr.Soviero. Finally we end our meetings by motioning an end to a meeting and having a second motion that can make sure we officially ended our meeting and all the topics we covered, were discussed.
Student Council is a great honor in our school, and is a great club to be involved in. Student Council brings out the best in us and shows our true potential in being good role models and good citizens. Student Council isn’t just any old club, it is a place full of students who want to make a difference and be heard.
