La-on Canales Chun from St Philip’ s College, Alice Springs, has been announced as the 2025 winner of the AMOS Physics Award, recognising the best Year 12 student in physics in the Northern Territory( NT).
Mr Chun achieved an A + Merit in Physics and 2nd place in the NT in 2025 with an ATAR of 99.75.
The award, sponsored by the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society( AMOS), is given each year for academic excellence in physics and includes a $ 500 prize, as well as one year of AMOS membership. It was presented last week at the Northern Territory Board of Studies( NTBOS) annual award ceremony in Alice Springs, among other student awards, including the Northern Territory Administrator ' s Medal, the School-based Apprentice / Trainee of the Year, Vocational Education and Training Awards, and the Karmi Sceney Aboriginal Excellence and Leadership Awards.
Introduced jointly by the NTBOS and AMOS in 2008, the AMOS Physics Award has a long history of recognizing high-achieving students in physics, and awardees have been students of high calibre. For example, the 2024 AMOS Physics Award winner, Samuel Ricketts from Essington School, Darwin, won five other awards for his academic performance in 2024, including the Chief Minister’ s award for the Most Outstanding Stage 2 Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training( NTCET) Student, placement in the Top Twenty NTCET Students, a Certificate of Merit in Physics and Philosophy, and the Rotary Club of Darwin Hugh Bradley Award for Humanities.
