We’ ve also witnessed the discovery and deeper understanding of key climate phenomena, such as the different types of El Niño – Southern Oscillation, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and longterm trends in the Southern Annular Mode, which were not covered in the previous monograph. These developments, along with the increasing importance of long-term climate data, are why this edition now includes“ Climate” in the title.
The book features 13 chapters written by over 100 scientists from 22 countries and different career stages, many of whom are based in the Southern Hemisphere. It provides a comprehensive description of the dynamics and thermodynamics of the atmosphere in the Southern Hemisphere. Additionally, it describes the role of the oceans in climate, highlights the impact of extreme events and observed changes in our climate, explores future projections in a warming world, and discusses the current state and challenges of climate modelling.
Promoting the book at the conference
At ICSHMO, several authors presented summaries of their chapter content to give the audience a taste of what’ s coming up. These presentations were part of the morning plenary sessions, with two to three chapters featured each day.
The conference was not only a fantastic event to promote the upcoming book, but also a special opportunity to meet many of the authors in person for the first time. It was great to be reunited with my fellow co-editors, Tercio and Thando, as we normally work across three different time zones— Tercio in Brazil, Thando in South Africa and me in Australia.
A special moment was meeting Ms. Nomalungelo Gina, South Africa’ s Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, who showed great interest in the book. I promised to send her a copy once it’ s out. We also had the pleasure of awarding copies to students who gave the best presentations.
Huge thanks to all the authors who presented and contributed to this new edition, and to the conference organisers for creating such a welcoming space. It was an enormous pleasure to see old friends, meet new colleagues, and celebrate the incredible work being done on Southern Hemisphere weather and climate.
Stay tuned for the book release at the end of the year!
