9 made that decision . We were completely sold out , so apologies to everyone we had to tell to stay home . There will be other opportunities , and we hope that you could still connect with the international speakers during their tour of various institutions .
As part of the discussions , we asked participants what the current challenges are in atmospheric dynamics , and what subjects we , as a community , should turn our attention to in the not-too-distant future . We also asked for ways to keep building a community and maintain it in the future . There were a lot of ideas and possible directions , but specific points that crystallised were trying to understand the Australian monsoon , tackling interactions across scales , working towards a moist dynamical theory , and making use of all the diverse information and data available for research . For community building , the ideas we heard most often were to organise more in-person workshops and conferences of the same sort , dedicated sessions at the AMOS conference , and some sort of tool for online communication .
Dedicated workshops require funding , so I cannot promise anything . But we have already proposed a dedicated session in atmospheric dynamics in the upcoming 2025 AMOS conference , and there is a mailing list you can sign up to where all things atmospheric dynamics can be posted and discussed ( just shoot me an email to be added ). Big journeys begin with small steps .
Finally , I am happy to announce the winners of three early career awards at the conference : The award for best presentation went to Lara Richards ( Monash University ), Kim Reid ( Monash University ) was voted the most active contributor to discussions , and Thomas Valentini ( University of Melbourne ) is the recipient of the inaugural Karoly Prize for Most Engaging Presentation of Equations . Congratulations to all award recipients .
Big thanks to my co-organiser Michael Barnes , as well as Vilia Co , Taira Malby-Freckleton and Jeanette Dargaville for their administrative support . And thanks to all the participants , you have made the conference a success .
