Earth warms . 21st Century Weather ’ s Circulation Change theme aims to address this challenge by analysing the nonlinear interactions across scales from global circulations down to small elements within them .
A second question is how changes in these weather systems translate into the weather elements that society uses in planning its activities — wind , rainfall , sunshine , and temperature . The Centre ’ s Weather Change theme will translate changes in the weather systems into changes in weather resources . It will discover how weather resources and high-impact weather events relate to weather systems and how this relationship will evolve in a warmer world .
A third issue is the insufficient detail in the current generation of climate models . The Modelling Science theme will design modelling systems at scales of a few kilometres globally and provide the tools to analyse and interpret the simulations carried out with them . The ability to map circulation and weather system changes , to examine the implications of those changes , and to simulate them with unprecedented detail and accuracy will transform our understanding of both circulation and weather change .
This work will now begin in earnest , with a cohort of outstanding Research Fellows and graduate students having joined 21st Century Weather in recent months .
“ The ground-breaking work that transforms our field will be conducted by a new generation of scientists ,” Professor Jakob said .
“ We will mentor and nurture them and equip them with the skills needed to address the future challenges of weather change .”
For 21st Century Weather to achieve its ambitious objectives , one outcome in particular is crucial — the Centre will produce the first generation of weather change scientists , equipped with the skills , knowledge and experience to bridge the gap between scientific understanding of climate and weather and the pressing needs of all Australians .
