New Climate Systems Hub : science to support climate change adaptation
National Environmental Science Program ( NESP ) Climate Systems Hub
Australia ’ s climate science is world class . With globally recognised researchers across multiple fields and organisations , we have the expertise needed to address questions about the impact of climate change on our region .
The
Climate Systems Hub is one of four research hubs under the Australian Government ’ s National Environmental Science Program ( NESP ). Launched at the end of 2021 , the Hub is a collaboration of multiple Australian research and policy agencies , allowing us to draw on expertise across the country to better understand our climate and how it is changing .
Co-design for high impact research
The Climate Systems Hub is using a strong co-design approach to plan and implement research . This will ensure our research is targeted to the needs of Australian environmental and climate decision-makers . The result is a program of climate research that will deliver impact by supporting evidence-based policies , planning and management activities .
" The Hub will play a vital role in bridging the gap between what the science says about our changing climate and how Australian decision-makers apply this information in their work ," said Dr Simon Marsland , leader of the Climate System Hub .
The Hub will also integrate adaptation activities across NESP to support a national climate change adaptation capability .
Indigenous Partnerships for on-Country solutions
Building and maintaining strong , respectful and lasting relationships with Indigenous Australian is a key focus of the Hub . Ensuring Indigenous leadership and cultural protocols are applied to our research will result in the production of relevant and targeted climate change information that can be used by Indigenous communities to help them care for community , Country and Sea under a changing climate .
Building on decades of climate science capability
" The Climate Systems Hub isn ’ t starting from scratch ," said Dr Marsland . " We have the benefit of building on the incredible climate research capability developed in Australia over many decades , including strong Indigenous partnerships and codesign principles developed by the Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub ."
