Energy and weather webinar

Johanna Speirs
Event overview
As part of AMOS ' continuing efforts to “ promote applications of our science for the benefit of all Australians ” the society recently hosted a conversation on energy and weather . Our speakers brought an international perspective alongside a clear understanding of Australia ’ s opportunities and pitfalls .
The speakers covered a range of topics as described below .
Alberto Troccoli
Co-founder and Managing Director World Energy Meteorology Council
Alberto demonstrated why energy and meteorology are inseparable . Firstly , there was the story of Lyra who works in the energy sector and seeks to manage uncertainty . Next there was an assessment of the economic value of a seasonal forecast in Europe with a case study focussing on predicting heatwaves . Finally , there was discussion around seasonal solar radiation variability along with solar radiation projections .
Reflections
Our community delights when our science is applied , for this reason we celebrate the excellent renewable resources that we share in Australia . As a basis for further optimism we should acknowledge that “ predictability ” is another resource which Australia is fortunate enough to have .
The speakers demonstrated that here in Australia we are able to develop and also attract the best and brightest minds from around the world to help transition us into an energy super power fuelled by weather .
Asif Bhangor
Engineer Design Manager AusNet Services
Asif summarised the types of severe weather events which impact the high voltage network around Australia . The presentation involved contrasting features of the old ( 1950 – 1980 ) and newer Overhead line ( OHL ) standards .

A note from the Editorial team : An enormous thanks to the speakers and in particular Roger Dargaville and Johanna Speirs for helping every step . For those interested the webinar is available to stream on the AMOS website .
