Exploring the future of our oceans
Taken from ECOS ( a CSIRO publication )
National Science Week
15 – 23 August 2020
More than 100 researchers from CSIRO and the University of Tasmania — spanning a diverse spread of disciplines that includes climate science , psychology , ecology , philosophy , economics , engineering and law — have recently been working on a collaborative project to address key issues from the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development .
Led by a team from the Centre for Marine Socioecology , the Future Seas 2030 project invited researchers to gather for a series of one‐ and two‐day workshops , as well as a week-long workshop that included Indigenous and Traditional Knowledge Holders from around the world .
The researchers identified 12 key challenges facing the oceans , ranging from biodiversity and climate change through to ocean governance and the blue economy . For each of these , a working group developed two future scenarios : the first envisioned what the ocean might look like in 2030 if we continue on a ' business as usual ' path ; the second considered what might be possible if we use existing knowledge and technology — locally , regionally and globally — to strive towards the Sustainable Development Goals .

The theme for National Science Week 2020 was " Deep Blue : innovation for the future of our oceans ". Did you get involved with Science Week ? What was your highlight ?
A whole host of interesting , practical resources are available online for students to drive engagement in sciences .
The National Science Week website has a great publication ' 2020 Deep Blue Teaching Resource Book ' and DIY science projects to try at home .
Primary connections has a series of videos and guidance for a range of schooling years : https :// primaryconnections . org . au / news / national-science-week-15-23-august-2020 .
And there is a resource about measuring ocean temperature .
The Australian Science Teachers Association has a resource book of ideas and a student journal to celebrate the theme : https :// asta . edu . au / programs / natscienceweek / resources / national _ science _ week _ 2020 _ resources .
Please send us links to other useful resources and activities you come across . It would be great to share these with the Education and Outreach Committee ( who collated this great list ) to pass on to the AMOS community .
