Reflections from recent
conferences
This issue is packed with conference highlights fresh from
the AMOS 2020 Conference in Fremantle and the American
Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting in Boston.
Reflect on some of the moments from AMOS2020 shared by
colleagues on Twitter and take the opportunity to read the
speech from a celebrated member of the AMOS community,
Professor Neville Nicholls, as he accepts the Zillman Medal.

Climate and education
As a side event at the AMOS 2020 Conference, secondary
school teachers joined delegates for a workshop on building
climate science into the curriculum. The aim of the workshop
was to develop secondary school lesson plans on climate
science and contribute them to an international repository.
Read all about the outcomes in this issue.

Drought in history
This issue we feature a flashback to the 1913–15 drought,
examining the environmental, political and social impacts of
the severe conditions. With quotes from the political leaders
of the time, black‑and‑white photographs and analysis of the
climatological drivers that contributed, it's a great read.

Seasonal snaps
The summer edition of this section presents some exceptional
east coast photographs from the past three months which
are now etched in history. The smoke haze across Canberra,
Sydney, Melbourne and other parts of Australia has resulted in
some rather sombre and striking sunrises and sunsets. Check
out the shots from the last season throughout the issue too.
