2019 AMOS Art Competition winners
Veronica Tamsitt
AMOS Education and Outreach Committee Chair
One of the most anticipated highlights of the year for AMOS is the annual
school Art Competition. In 2019, the theme of the competition was "my
favourite weather" and we invited students from Preschool to Grade 9 to
submit an artwork illustrating their favourite weather.
We were inundated with excellent entries, and many creative interpretations
of "my favourite weather". While sunny warm weather (perfect for eating ice
cream) was a popular theme, there are many lovers of rain, snow, wind and
waves as well. There were many entries illustrating how the weather can
support many of our favourite outdoor activities, and enjoying the weather
can be an activity on its own.
We are pleased to present the winning art of the 2019 Art Competition.
Many thanks to my fellow members of the AMOS Education and Outreach
Committee who judged the competition. We had a difficult time in making
their decision as we had so many outstanding entries. AMOS would like to
thank all participants for taking the time to share their amazing artwork
with us and encourage you to enter again in the future.
Preschool Winner—
The Rainbow Serpent
Banksia Group,
Gardiner Pre School, Glen Iris (VIC)
Every child in the Banksia Group has contributed to this collaborative
painting. It is nearly 25 metres long and stretches down the wall and
snakes up onto the roof.
We recently read several books about The Rainbow Serpent. The story
is a Dreamtime story shared by many different indigenous groups. The
serpent is the embodiment of weather. Depending on the story, the
Rainbow Serpent/weather is terrifying as it brings rain and thunder
that wreaks havoc, carving valleys and rivers. But the Rainbow Serpent
also brings hope and new life because it’s brings the rain. The water
from the rain will replenish the land and allow the people, animals and
plants to flourish. While the weather / Rainbow Serpent is scary it is
our favourite weather as it is ‘total drama’ and allows the world to live.
