18 BAMOS Sep 2019 Article Electricity Sector Climate Information (ESCI) Project Department of the Environment and Energy Email: Climate.Adaptation@environment.gov.au The Electricity Sector Climate Information (ESCI) project is a collaboration between government, industry and scientists to improve the reliability and resilience of the National Electricity Market to the risks from climate change and extreme weather. Changes in the climate, including the increasing number of extreme weather events, can increase stress on power systems, so it is important that changes are well understood and considered in long‑term risk analysis. The project is tailoring climate change data and information to ensure it is easy to access and usable by the people who need it, to support improved long‑term operational and strategic planning for electricity infrastructure. A key part of the project is developing a standardised methodology for analysing physical climate change risk for the electricity sector. This methodology may also be applicable to other sectors. Early progress In its second of three years the project has already achieved a number of outcomes. These include identifying the climate impacts which are most relevant to the electricity sector, generating tailored data sets to inform scenario analysis, and working with AEMO to provide advice and guidance on how to best use available climate change information to inform processes for risk management decision‑making. For more information To find out more about the ESCI project please email Climate. Adaptation@environment.gov.au. Project partners The project is funded by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy and is being undertaken by CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology in collaboration with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
