30th Anniversary Symposium
THE SCIENCE FOR LIFE SYMPOSIUM: Life-Changing Science in Weather, Oceans, Water and Climate
22–23 August 2017. Melbourne Convention Centre
The following pages present summaries from the presentations
at the 30th Anniversary Symposium, with the theme: Science for
Life. This Symposium featured high-level plenary talks exploring
the issues and focusing on cutting-edge developments in
weather, oceans, water, climate and sparking cross-disciplinary
ideas across our sciences.
The speakers were multidisciplinary from the senior scientist
ranks of the CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, Australian
Antarctic Division, University of New South Wales, University of
Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Environment, Land,
Water and Planning. The presenters were invited to showcase
the fact that across the world, 24 hours a day, our scientists are
using the most sophisticated technologies to observe, measure
and analyse the Earth’s vital signs. The talks were designed to
tell the story of how their insights and innovations are helping
us protect and enhance life.
Our special international guests and speakers included David
Carlson, Director of the World Climate Research Programme,
David Grimes, President of the World Meteorological
Organization, Ellie Highwood, President of the Royal
Meteorological Society and Brian Golding, Co-chair of World
Meteorological Organization’s 10-year high impact weather
research project, HIWeather. The Governor of Victoria, the
Honourable Linda Dessau AC gave an opening address. The
Symposium audience included a cross section of society, such as
scientists, students, government, industry and other interested
stakeholders.
