Drought conditions in the east
In the NSW State Seasonal Update published in August 2018, the NSW Department of Primary Industries( DPI) stated that“ close to 100 % of the state [ is ] in one of the three drought categories”.
The Bureau reports that rainfall deficiencies continue in the east( Figure 1 below) and that rainfall deficiencies have increased.
Snow this season
Reports from the snow-goers returning from the slopes have been positive with good coverage reported and most runs still open in early September. According to the SnowyHydro Snow Depths Calculator, it’ s been an above average year. The season started in June and officially ends in early October.

Google is making it easier to discover data
Google has launched a new service providing a search function across datasets. The Google article published on September 5 explains the service as below.
“ There are many thousands of data repositories on the web, providing access to millions of datasets; and local and national governments around the world publish their data as well. To enable easy access to this data, we launched Dataset Search.”
IPCC reports
Australian scientists are contributing to the next round of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change( IPCC) reporting cycle. A blog has been written about the meeting of the lead authors for the IPCC‘ Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate’.
Work is also under way on the Sixth Assessment Report, which will be completed in 2021, with the first Lead Author meeting for Working Group I( physical science) taking place in Guangzhou, China in late June. The Special Report on Global Warming at 1.5 ° C is approaching completion and will be released in early October.
