Weather in literature quiz
with Matthias Tomczak
Continental climates with their extreme winter colds and
summer heat have always fascinated me, and the description
of a summer day in Little Russia in our last issue is one of my
favorite passages. It comes from ”The Fair at Sorochyntsi”, the
first story in the collection Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka by
Nikolai Gogol.
The quote in our last issue was translated from Russian, and
sadly no one correctly identified the lovely decription. Maybe
we’ll have more luck this round?
We marveled at the daily drama of the
weather over Table Mountain, with its shifting
canopy of clouds and sun. … In the summer
the water felt wonderful, but in winter the icy
Benguela Current made wading out into the
waves a torture.

and ocean?
