modelling experiments. This systems expertise will continue in
CLEx.
CLEx will also drive new approaches to training, mentoring and
equipping the next generation of scientists in our field via our
researcher development program led by Dr Melissa Hart. The
Centre will also be at the forefront of developing equity, diversity
and wellbeing initiatives to address systemic disadvantages for
women and other under-represented groups in our field.
This Centre’s focus on the processes that help understand and
predict extremes will enable it to more directly engage with the
areas where climate is most felt and has the greatest impact
on people, environments and economies. The importance

of understanding extreme events, how to predict them more
accurately and to reveal how they may alter in a changing
climate makes the work of the Centre immediate and applicable
across a broad spectrum of Australian society.
Given the significance of climate extremes to Australia and the
challenges of improving their prediction we see opportunities
to work with many in the AMOS community. We therefore
intend to provide strong support for AMOS into the future
and in particular by working to ensure the next generation of
researchers engage fully in national conferences.
