On my previous visit Mark the proprietor of Up North Adventures informed me that I must be a ‘snow bird’ implying I fly away when the cold weather arrives and I should really test myself my enjoying the same wilderness in the depths of winter. The gauntlet was thrown. Mark introduced me to the late Alex Van Bib ber, a legendary outdoorsman in Canada’s history. When I met Alex he was 98 and still hunting and trapping and we asked him about one of his big trips, a 516mile expedition through the MacKensie Mountain Range in 1943, part of the war effort. It took Alex, a first nation tracker and his team 42 days with 12 days at sub minus 40 to battle through. We spent a week training and testing kit (including Bamboo Clothing) in 2014 as part of our planned Ski to the Edge Expedition. This included sleeping in snow holes and tents in minus 30. We hope to finally (with some additional sponsors – Don’t be shy people) start skiing 500 miles in 2017 with more training in 2016. Yukon and Alaska now have a place firmly in my heart and I know it will keep calling me back for more unfinished business. Trust me when I tell you that Alaska and the Yukon has a magic quality that everyone should experience at least once if they get the chance. It’s golden. Of course whilst we might write about tough adventures, the people that live there simply call it home. We want to share BAMLife stories of travel and exploring new places in each edition to encourage and inspire you to travel and explore, whether on your doorstep or further afield. I am proud to be a BAMbassador you can find more of my story @ bambooclothing.co.uk/BAMbassadors.html 15
