Alistair Humphreys
cycled around the world.
when began his epic cycle journey. He modestly says
that if you cycle for a day and can pitch a tent, you
can do what he did by just repeating that process
every day for four years.
So how does all this relate to us as a family, as new
BAMbassadors?
Well, we are not a family of renowned adventurers but
when we became parents we wanted to encourage and
facilitate our children to grow up with an adventurous
mindset and a positive outlook. We knew that this
would set them up for life. In order to do this, we just
had to make a start… take our first step. We just had
start going out and finding adventure.
Getting started
Our first attempts at adventure were small;.we started
simply since our girls were young. This involved just
trying to make everyday life a bit more interesting by
doing everyday things differently.
In 2010 we started reading Alastair Humphreys' blog
introducing us to microadventures: small, simple
adventures that push you out of your comfort zone.
These were just what we were looking for. We couldn't
dream of doing the big stuff that Alistair Humphreys
and Dave Cornthwaite do, but microadventures, or
‘Meekro adventures’ as we called them, were perfect
for us. Before long our first taste for microadventures
turned into our first family project: a Year of
10
Adventures. This involved us going out most
weekends throughout the year, to different places to
try different things as a family.
Once the year was up, the activities that we had tried
became the basis for our second project: 100 family
adventures – a more extensive list of ideas for family
adventures outdoors that were fun, feasible and
relatively cheap, if not free. When we completed the
list of 100 family adventures we shared the list on
our website, in the hope that other families might
have a go. It was also made into our first family book,
all piloted by us.
