He modestly says that if you cycle for a day and can pitch a tent, you can do what he did by just repeating that process every day for four years. So how does all this relate to us as a family, as new BAMbassadors? Well, we are not a family of renowned adventurers but when we became parents we wanted to encourage and facilitate our children to grow up with an adventurous mindset and a positive outlook. We knew that this would set them up for life. In order to do this, we just had to make a start… take our first step. We just had start going out and finding adventure. Getting started Our first attempts at adventure were small;.we started simply since our girls were young. This involved just trying to make everyday life a bit more interesting by doing everyday things differently. In 2010 we started reading Alastair Humphreys' blog introducing us to microadventures: small, simple adventures that push you out of your comfort zone. These were just what we were looking for. We couldn't dream of doing the big stuff that Alistair Humphreys and Dave Cornthwaite do, but microadventures, or ‘Meekro adventures’ as we called them, were perfect for us. Before long our first taste for microadventures turned into our first family project: a Year of 10 Adventures. This involved us going out most weekends throughout the year, to different places to try different things as a family. Once the year was up, the activities that we had tried became the basis for our second project: 100 family adventures – a more extensive list of ideas for family adventures outdoors that were fun, feasible and relatively cheap, if not free. When we completed the list of 100 family adventures we shared the list on our website, in the hope that other families might have a go. It was also made into our first family book, all piloted by us.
