Baltimore’ s always been a rebel for the right causes.
LONG BEFORE THERE WAS CHARM CITY, THERE WAS MOBTOWN—
a port city with a widespread reputation for revolting against injustice, including British tyranny, bank fraud and low wages.
First coined in the 1800s, the Mobtown moniker was meant to chastise a Baltimore prone to lawlessness and unrest. But more than 200 years later, the nickname
is a badge of honor that speaks to our founders’ resilience and activism. This rebellious history is one we celebrate more than ever as we approach America’ s 250th anniversary this summer. After all, Baltimoreans’ willingness to get in some“ good trouble,” a phrase coined by U. S. Representative and civil rights activist John Lewis, led to the creation of our national anthem, the repeal of prohibition, the desegregation of schools and more.
