Charm City ’ s Secondhand Scene
W ith the textile industry responsible for nearly 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions , it ’ s crucial to reevaluate the rate at which we consume clothing . Sourcing our wardrobes from secondhand stores can help reduce carbon emissions by 25 %. But it ’ s not just the planet that benefits . Baltimore ’ s neighborhoods teem with vintage , thrift and antique stores that cater to every aesthetic , so you ’ re sure to find something you love for way less than you would pay at the mall .
HAMPDEN
As home to more than 10 thrift , vintage and antique stores , Hampden is the undisputed capital of Charm City ’ s secondhand scene . Most of these shops are located on the iconic 36th Street , also known as The Avenue . If you ’ re arriving via I-83 , parking on Falls Road by Roosevelt Park puts you in the perfect position to explore the west end of The Avenue . Start with clothing stores Doubledutch Boutique and its upstairs neighbor Changed My Mind Vintage before perusing the midcentury modern wares at Paradiso .
Enjoy lunch at local favorite The Food Market before heading to The Avenue ’ s east end , where you ’ ll find The Parisian Flea , Charlotte Elliott & The Bookstore Next Door , Balto Vintage , Strawberry Fields and the Lost & Found thrift shop tucked inside St . Luke ’ s Church on the Avenue across the street . Not shopped-out yet ? Venture deeper into the neighborhood to view colorful rowhomes , funky street art and lush parks . Stop into furniture and décor stores Turnover Shop and Wishbone Reserve as you pass them .
REMINGTON
Few boutiques encapsulate Baltimoreans ’ myriad styles better than Get Shredded Vintage , owned by Remington ’ s resident tastemaker Sara Autrey . The petite store is packed with eccentric pre-owned fashions and household items , from 1900s prairie dresses to ’ 60s denim workwear and electric ’ 80s blouses .
Just down the street from Get Shredded is the food hall R . House and its Garage , an industrial events space that transforms into a sprawling vintage clothing market every other month . The free event , Vintagepalooza , brings together the area ’ s top resellers , giving you access to high-quality secondhand clothing , accessories and shoes . Come dressed to impress the on-site photographer , who may snap your pic for the market ’ s Instagram page .
