Two days of celebration return to Pimlico Race Course for Preakness 149 , which begins with Black-Eyed Susan Day on Friday , May 17 and culminates with the running of the 149th Preakness Stakes on Saturday , May 18 . An important part of the heritage of thoroughbred racing in Maryland , Pimlico Race Course is located just a few miles northwest of downtown and is the second-oldest racetrack in the country . The legendary Preakness Stakes is the middle jewel in the Triple Crown series after the Kentucky Derby and before the Belmont Stakes .
Preakness 149 includes Maryland ’ s best infield experience , Preakness Live , a festival of live music , entertainment , art , culture and community celebrating Baltimore ’ s rich diversity and vibrant energy . Preakness Live takes place on race day , May 18 , at the track .
