LOCUST
Fort McHenry
POINT
As home to Fort McHenry , this harborside neighborhood is a must-visit locale for history lovers . The fort defended the Baltimore harbor against the British during the War of 1812 — but it ’ s probably best known as being the inspiration for Francis Scott Key ’ s “ Star-Spangled Banner .” Nowadays , visitors can tour the fort and learn about the flag ’ s wartime beginnings .
A little over a mile away is the Baltimore Museum of Industry , which documents the city ’ s journey into a thriving industrial center . The museum is housed in a former oyster cannery and has replicas of trade shops like a 1910 pharmacy , a 1929 garment loft and a 1936 printing press . Along the water outside the museum , you can see the oldest steam-powered tugboat in the U . S ., built in 1906 .
