Many people know Jim Henson as the revolutionary artist , storyteller and creator of The Muppet Show , which gave us the beloved figures Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy . But did you know that Henson was a Maryland native who came up with his first show , Sam and Friends , as a freshman at the University of Maryland ? In hosting the traveling 5,000-square-foot Muppet-filled multimedia show Imagination Unlimited , the Maryland Center for History & Culture welcomes Henson back home and celebrates his unparalleled body of work , unrelenting curiosity and impact on modern media .

For centuries , women artists were treated as anomalies and considered less talented than their male counterparts . Their work was often dismissed as amateur , or as material culture rather than art . Making Her Mark employs more than 175 objects from the 15th to 18th centuries — from tapestries to costumes to furniture — that reflect the multifaceted ways in which women contributed to Europe ’ s artistic culture and puts women of all socioeconomic statuses in conversation with one another .

From this innovative museum that champions self-taught and unconventional artists comes a new mega-exhibition that invites visitors into the handcrafted environments built by such visionaries as Zebedee Armstrong , Gayleen Aiken , Ruby C . Williams , Leslie Payne , Devon Smith and Baltimore ’ s own Loring Cornish . Visitors can engage with this exhibit ’ s theme through interactive touch-screen maps that allow them to explore visionary environments across the country .

The Baltimore Museum of Industry celebrates our industrial legacy and highlights the people and innovations that helped shape the city . Their latest permanent exhibit , The Neighborhood Corner Bar , explores how corner bars were social spaces where generations of working-class Baltimoreans went to find community , security and leisure on their own terms .
Ethiopia at the Crossroads The Walters Art Museum

As a bridge between Europe and the Middle East in the Horn of Africa , Ethiopia is an eclectic blend of languages , religions and climates , though its contributions to global history and culture are often overlooked . Ethiopia at the Crossroads , the first major American art exhibition of its kind , ends this cycle by putting more than 200 Ethiopian artifacts on display . Items include painted icons , illuminated manuscripts , carved crosses and works by contemporary Ethiopian artists .
