Pairing classic paintings from the Italian Renaissance and Baroque art periods with contemporary portraits from six local artists , Activating the Renaissance aims to bridge connections between past and present stylistic modes and methods of self-expression . The Walters Art Museum ’ s collection of Italian paintings , among the finest in the country and home to the museum ’ s most popular pieces , will take on new meaning when displayed alongside modern works that both echo and reinvent the themes and techniques of the Renaissance .

From cozy winter coverings to sentimental family heirlooms , quilts have many roles in our lives . While working as a psychiatrist at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in the early 1940s , Dr . William Rush Dunton Jr . discovered that quilts — and the process of making them — can also be used as therapeutic tools for people with mental illnesses . The repetitive and communal nature of quilting served as a creative outlet and temporary distraction for his patients , many of whom were women . Wild and

Untamed follows Dr . Dunton ’ s impressive career and the patients he helped through the lens of Baltimore album quilts , a popular artistic mode that swept the city from 1840-1855 . Quilts will be swapped out halfway through the exhibition ’ s run , making it worth seeing twice ! |
Food For Thought : Spotlighting Food Service Workers at Baltimore City Public Schools

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic , Baltimore City Public Schools ’ Food and Nutrition employees continued to prepare food for city youth and their families — often from their own kitchens . Food For Thought honors those selfless workers through intimate portraits taken by photographer J . M . Giordano and thought-provoking interviews conducted by WYPR ’ s Aaron Henkin that invite the viewers to join the fight against food insecurity in Charm City . In addition to being on display at the Baltimore Museum of Industry , viewers can see the exhibition at the Baltimore City Public Schools ’ district office on North Avenue .

Abundance : Too Much , Too Little , Just Right

Aimed at exalting resourcefulness and creative self-reliance over material dependence and excess , Abundance features one-of-a-kind works from over 40 visionary artists who primarily employ nontraditional artistic materials . Think houses made from glass bottles , life-sized aluminum foil statues and hand-cut paper plates . In addition to artifacts , the exhibition will also include film excerpts and children ’ s maker stations .
