AN EVENING AT THE OPERA
This month the Latvian National
Opera and Ballet is presenting
several classic operas, including
Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot, La
bohème, and Madama Butterfly as
well as Giuseppe Verdi’s La travi-
ata, Richard Wagner’s The Flying
Dutchman, and Georges Bizet’s
Carmen.
As you enjoy the splendid perfor-
mance, take a look around at the
interior, too. Constructed in 1863,
the building is considered one of the
most ornate examples of 19 th -cen-
tury architecture in Riga. But that
status also calls for a certain dress
code. When Rigans go to the opera
or ballet, they still dress up.

Colour of the year
Colour expert Pantone has chosen a peachy
orange shade named Living Coral, or Pantone
16-1546, as its colour of the year for 2019. The
colour is chosen based on ‘what is taking place
in our global culture at a moment in time’.
According to the brand, Living Coral is the kind
of colour you could paint a whole room. It
would be great, for example, in an entryway or
a bathroom.

Word on the street
From high-end fashion houses to mainstream
sportswear, logomania is everywhere. The trend
features not only brand names but also various
messages. Passionate travellers might enjoy
the Venezia collection from Latvian jewellery
designer Anna Fanigina, in which quotes about
the famous Italian city from French, English,
Russian, Italian, and Spanish prose and poetry
appear on classic Verba designs.

Studies have shows that clothing and toys are
crucial objects through which children learn about
how to match colours and how to distinguish
good-quality items from those of poorer quality.
As they ponder their children’s developing sense
