Kaffirs were brought to Sri Lanka in the
colonial times as slaves, dockhands and
soldiers. Now, they are totally assimilated
within the Sri Lankan society. They
speak Sinhala and Tamil but their native
language is still used among older people
and in their songs. The Sri Lankan Kaffirs
have contributed to a style of music
called Baila, popular music in Sri Lanka
that combines African, European, and
Asian elements.
Approximately 9 km from Kandakuliya
there is a small, peaceful town of
Kalpitiya. Known mainly as a kite
surfing spot, it has not too many others
attractions to offer. One of them is the
