WHY DO PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER
THE WORLD COME TO PUTALLAM
LAGOON?
This question bothered us since we got
off at the junction of Kandakuliya Beach
Road. After bustling Colombo and a
few hours bus ride the place seemed
extremely quiet and empty. Three tuk-
tuks, several small shops and it was it.
ARE WE SURE WE WANTED TO
COME HERE?
We did not have enough time to wonder,
because one of the tuk-tuks drew up and
after short negotiation we were going
towards our accommodation.
The Villa turned out to be a small
cosy place almost in the center of
Kandakuliya, close to a lagoon. There
we met a Finnish girl who was a diving
enthusiasts and a Czech guy who was a
kite surfer. They both traveled as we did,
making their own plans and they were
definitely going to visit Sri Lanka again.

The first walk over the bay proved that
it was a kingdom of kite surfers. The
whole sky was covered with kites, which
were like a flock of giant coloured birds
hovering over the blue sea. A strong
wind allowed experts of this sport to
show off their talents.
For us, this turned out to be too strong
to try it for the first time in our lives.
However, we did not regret it because
the sunset gave us an display with kite
surfers in the lead role.
Kandakuliya itself looked a little different
from most of the villages we saw in
Sri Lanka. Probably the location in the
dry zone gave us the impression of
starkness, while people were as friendly
as on the whole island.
This was the first time we encountered
such an intense cultural mixture, because
the majority of the population in the
Putallam Lagoon area is composed
of Muslims, Sinhalese and Srilankan
Tamils. The rest are Burghers, Malays,
Indian Tamils and other minorities. An
interesting fact for us was that there lives
also an ethnic group of African origins.
