FEATURED BODYBUILDER
RICARDO BASCOMBE
Ricardo Bascombe first started training at the age of 13 at
a gym situated in the yard of the Weston Fire Service
station. Motivated by the TV series ‘The Incredible
Hulk’, Ricardo’s first competition was at the Mr. Junior
Barbados Championship in August 1990, where he placed
4th. His next competition was in 1994 at the Mr. St
Michael competition where he also placed 4th. However,
later in 1997 at the Mr. Barbados Light Heavy Weight
Champ, Ricardo soared to 1st place defeating other
promising contenders. Ricardo continued to compete in
many other competitions after. In 1998 Ricardo placed 2 nd
at the Mr. St Michael’s competition and later in 2000 he
also landed 2nd place in the Light Heavy category.
However, his greatest achievement came when he won
Mr. Bridgetown in March 2001 and later in April 2001
when he won best legs, chest, back, arms and most
muscular in the Mr. St Michael competition. Ricardo also
came first at the Mr. Barbados Championships in August
the same year where he competed in the Super Middle
Weight class.
In his own words: “Body building has taught me how to
be more disciplined, and self motivated. It has given me
much more confidence in myself as a person and has
granted me a good strong mind. I’ve gained more respect
from friends, family and the wider community from
participating in body building. I’ve also realised that
patience, dedication and discipline is the backbone of
becoming a true bodybuilder. I do enjoy the health
benefits that come with being a bodybuilder.”
