Did you miss this year ’ s deadline for filing your federal and state income tax returns ? Hopefully , you filed on time and maximized your refund or minimized the amount due either by taking the standard deduction or by itemizing your deductions . Speaking of itemizing deductions , the purpose of this article is to “ itemize ” the various match play situations wherein there can be a “ deduction ” of one or two holes for a breach of a Rule .
There are as many as twelve ( 12 ) different
Paul Kruger is a PGA professional at The Landings Club in Rules that contain penalty statements with deductions for match play . Beginning with Rule 4-1 [ Form and Make of Clubs ] and Rule 4-2 [ Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material ], the penalty statement in match play for a carrying , but not making a stroke with a club in breach of either of these Rules reads as follows :
“ At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered , the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred ; maximum deduction per round - Two holes . … If the breach is discovered between the play of two holes , it is deemed to have been discovered during play of the next hole , and the penalty must be applied accordingly .”
So , let ’ s say that you won the first hole of your match , but on the way to the second teeing ground , you discover that the shaft of your 7-iron , which you did not use while playing the first hole , is bent and thus is non-conforming , a breach of Rule 4-1 . Based on the foregoing , there will be a deduction of two holes , but that adjustment is made upon the completion of the second hole . If you win the second hole , you go “ 2-up ” but you must then adjust the state of the match by deducting two holes and so you are now “ all square .”
If , however you were to lose the second hole , the match would be “ all square ,” but then the two-hole adjustment would put you “ 2-down .”
Other Rules that have match play deduction penalty statements just like Rules 4-1 and 4-2 , i . e ., when the breach is discovered between the play of two holes , it is deemed to have been discovered during play of the next hole , include Rule 4-3c [ Damaged Clubs ; Repair and Replacement : Damage Prior to Round ], Rule 6-4 [ Caddie ], Decision 4-1 / 1 [ Groove and Punch Mark Specifications Effective January 1 , 2010 including Conditions of Competition ], Decision 33-8 / 4 [ Local Rule for Events in Which Motorized Golf Carts Permitted ], Conforming Driver Heads Condition , Caddie Restriction Condition , and the Transportation Condition .
Rule 4-4 [ Maximum of Fourteen Clubs ] has a slightly different penalty statement with regard to the discovery of the breach between the play of two holes :
“ At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered , the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred ; maximum deduction per round -
