Morton wins tight Mardi Gras
by Ian Auzenne
[Carencro, La.] – Mardi Gras is
famous for bringing excitement to
Louisiana every spring.
This year, the Carnival season
brought one of the tightest finishes in
Mizuno Louisiana USSSA Junior Golf
Tour history during last weekend’s
Mizuno USSSA Mardi Gras Mambo.
Despite the cool and blustery
conditions at the Farm d’Allie Golf
Club Saturday and Sunday, the golfers
in the Boys 15-18 class remained
competitive the entire tournament,
with only eight strokes separating first
place from sixth place.
Taylor Morton brought the
championship down the Evangeline
Thruway back to his home in
Broussard after winning the senior
division tournament, shooting 156 in
the two-day, 36-hole event. Runner-up
Sean Donovan of Mandeville finished
two strokes off the lead. Third-place
finisher Connor Hamilton finished
three strokes behind.
Ryan Dupuy of Baton Rouge
ran away with the Boys 12-14
championship, shooting 158 en route
to the victory. Roberto Espinosa, of
Arnaudville claimed runner-up honors
by shooting 173. Jace LeJeune of
Jenning, finished in third place with a
score of 182.
A pair of Lafayette golfers took the
top two spots in the Boys 9-11 group.
Kale Fontenot won the group title by
shooting 72. Jay Mendell took second
place with a total of 93.
