Thornberry earns Amateur of the Month
BIRMINGHAM , AL ( November 21 , 2016 ) – Collegiate golfer Braden Thornberry , currently ranked by the Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings as 74th in the Nation , has been named Amateur of the Month ( October ) by the Southern Golf Association ( SGA ).
Thornberry had a stellar month , taking the title at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational and finished T4 at the Marquette Intercollegiate .
In addition to taking the title at the AutoTrader . com Collegiate Classic , Thornberry ’ s tournament total for the event of 18-under 198 broke the three-round school record of 203 , while his secondround score of 8-under-par 66 set not only the school record but was also a career low .
Winners of the SGA ’ s monthly award are determined by a blue-ribbon national panel of golf officials , coaches and journalists . Now in its 14th season , notable recipients have been Bill Haas , Michelle Wie , Hunter Mahan , Ryan Moore , J . B . Holmes , Webb
Simpson , Rhys Davies , Kyle Stanley , Kevin Fortin-Simard , Rickie Fowler , Danny Lee , Matthew Fitzpatrick , Alice Hewson , and more recently Lee McCoy & Aaron Wise .
The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level , including staging of the storied Southern Amateur , as well as the Southern Junior Championship .
