Exciting Finish in MGA Final Round at the
Women’s Senior Amateur Championship
A warm and rain-free Wednesday night
helped course conditions dry out for the
MGA’s shotgun start on Thursday morning.
Going into the final round, Sheila Haynes of
Ridgeland held a three shot lead over Lou
Hart of Meridian in the Senior Division, and
DeRina Usher of Meridian also held a three
shot lead over her competitor, Margaret Carver
of Meridian, in the Grand Lady Division.
For the Grand Ladies, Usher would continue
her exceptional play by posting a final round
score of 78, and a total of score of 166, to
win her division by 8 strokes. Carver ended up
finishing in second place with a second round
score of 83, a final total score of 174.
More drama was to come out of the Senior
Division on the final day. With Pam Posey
of Bailey and Lou Hart both within striking
distance of Sheila Haynes, anything was bound
to happen. Posey ended up posting another
solid score of 75 with a total score of 149. It
was not quite enough to put her at the top of
the leaderboard, however.
Going into the final hole of the day, Hart
and Haynes were all tied up at 3 over par for
the tournament, with the last hole being the
deciding factor. While Haynes finishes the hole
with a par, Hart sinks the last putt to make birdie
and win the tournament by a single stroke over
Haynes. It was a very exciting finish to what the
MGA says was a great day.
The MGA congratulated both winners,
Derina Usher and Lou Hart, both from
Meridian, for their outstanding play. The
MGA also thanked the women golfers who
participated in the championship.
Lastly, the MGA thanked Northwood
Country Club for the hospitality.
Final results are posted HERE.
