Amateur Championship
by Mary Capouch
Julie Harrison of Baton Rouge, a ten-time Louisiana
Women’s Golf Association Champion, won her fifth
LWGA Senior Amateur Championship title with an
80-77—157 total at Le Triomphe Golf & Country
Club, Broussard. Marge Richters, Monroe, was runner-
up with 78-84—162 in the rain-soaked event, which
was conducted for the first time in tandem with the 19
th LWGA Mid-Amateur Championship. In addition to
a delay due to lightning on day one, the start of the
second round of play was delayed by rain along with
high winds. Terry Theriot, Jefferson, claimed the Super
Senior prize, and Grand Super Senior Champion was
Julia McKey, Slaughter. Harrison recently competed
in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship
at Waverly Country Club, Portland, Oregon and
has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Mid- Amateur
Championship, November 11-16 at Champions Golf
Club (Cypress Creek Course) in Houston. Originally,
slated for October 7-12 at Quail Creek Country Club,
Naples, Florida, the course, clubhouse and surrounding
area suffered significant damage from Hurricane Irma,
making it necessary for the USGA to reschedule the
Championship.
