opened up on the demanding Pete
Dye track at Stonebridge Country
Club with the low round of the
day by seven shots. The winds were
constant at 15-20 mph with gusts
up to 25. Sitting in second were
defending champs McNeese St. but
we had just dusted them off in our
last event in Baton Rouge. Feeling
even better.
Second round saw just as strong
of winds at Mother Nature was
playing her role in the tourney.
McNeese improved and we didn’t
have our best stuff. At the end of
the day, we were three shots back in
second. No big deal.
A rain delay in the morning
pushed back tee times nearly two
hours as the winds stayed up but
from a different direction. A totally
different course was presented.
My feelings going in were that
we would play our best round of the
year and steal the trophy from the
defending champs. However, the
strong north winds blew our games
south for the day. When it was all
said and done, we had dropped all
the way to 5th, and our long faces
after the round told the story.
Golf is a hard game and
sometimes when you think you’re
going to play well is when it jumps up and grabs you the hardest. All is
all a good year as we gave ourselves
a chance to win our conference
championship.
That’s all I can really ask for as
the coach.
Of course, he took my space
this month. He’s been taking over
all semester. Ever since he got this
coaching gig, he thinks he’s in
charge.
Well then ...
Jake and I have had a really
busy spring. With a stuffed golf
schedule for him and some new
responsibilities of my own at
Southeastern, we’ve been passing
each other coming and going.
I’m a little nervous about all
the togetherness we’re about to
experience.
We’re taking our grown children
on a cruise in just a couple of
weeks. And we are using it as a
celebration of our daughter Alex’s
engagement and graduation from
Southeastern. Neither Jake nor I
have ever been on a cruise. We’re
both well traveled, but not out on
the water with no where to go. I’ve had a chance to get away from him
in the last few months, and we will
be stuck with nowhere to go.
Now, I’m told these boats are big
with lots to do and lots to eat. Since
Jake’s hungry pretty much all the
time, that’s good for him. Since I
can’t sit still, good for me too.
I’m looking forward to the cruise,
and I’m really looking forward to
hanging out with the family and
figuring out who is who again.
Heck, I haven’t seen these people
all semester.
I hope they still like me.
