Tupelo members dominate home course amateur event
Trey Winstead , Simms Abney , Abby Daniel and Brook Tyree earned honors at the Junior PGA Championship at Diamondhead Country Club June 12-13 .
The champions will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation ’ s top male and female junior golfers in the PGA of America ’ s premium junior event , the 42nd Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championship , hosted at The Country Club of St . Albans in St . Albans , Missouri . The Country Club of St . Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event . The Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31-Aug . 3 . The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 18-21 .
This year ’ s Championship will have twice the field size of previous years . This means each of the 41 PGA of America Sections will receive two invitations per Division . Winstead , of Baton Rouge , the Gulf States PGA Boys Junior Champion with a two-day total of 65-66,131 , 13 under par will receive one invitation , and runner up Abney of Madison , Mississippi , received an At-Large Bid out of the Boys Division with a two-day total of 69-72 , 141 , three under par .
For the Girls Division , Daniel of Covington , Louisiana , Gulf States PGA Girls Junior Champion with a two-day total of 75-71 , 146 , two over par , will receive one invitation , and runner up Brooke Tyree of Sulphur , Louisiana , received an At-Large Bid out of the Girls Division with a two-day total of 76-72 , 148 , four over par .
The Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start . Many of today ’ s PGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship . Notable past participants Include : Tiger Woods , Justin Thomas , Jordan Spieth , Inbee Park , Lexi Thompson , and Cristie Kerr .
