GLOW-UP
You’ ve grown an entire human being, so it’ s only natural that your body feels different from what it did before pregnancy, and the same goes for your skin.
How to care for your skin during the postpartum phase
There are three key principles to keep in mind, and they’ re pretty easy:
As you adjust to life with your new little roommate( a much louder and less helpful one, at that), your skin also needs some extra care. Tweaking your skincare routine to meet these changing needs can help keep your complexion looking its best, even on the days you don’ t quite feel your best.
During pregnancy, oestrogen and progesterone levels are much higher, boosting hydration, elasticity and blood flow, hence that pregnancy“ glow”. But after birth, those hormone levels plummet, affecting your skin’ s moisture and oil balance. Your body is also recovering from delivery, while limited sleep, dehydration from breast-feeding can take quite a hit.
Stretch marks can also appear, because your skin stretches rapidly during pregnancy, with hormonal changes also making the skin more susceptible to them.
Post-pregnancy skin changes include:
• Eczema and dryness
• Hyperpigmentation
• Acne
• Melasma
• Stretch marks
Keep it simple Your skin is more sensitive than before, so a pared-down routine works best. Stick to the essentials: a gentle, non-stripping cleanser, a nourishing moisturiser that supports the skin barrier, and a daily broad-spectrum mineral SPF( never skip the sunscreen).
Read the ingredients carefully Focus on hydration and soothing. Look for ingredients that calm and strengthen the skin, such as vitamin E, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and Centella asiatica( cica). Avoid harsher actives like retinoids, salicylic acid, and products with strong fragrances, which can irritate sensitive postpartum skin.
Hydrate from within Both you and your skin are dehydrated, so internal hydration is just as important. Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E, omega-3 fatty acids, as well as leafy greens to support elasticity and a natural glow. Breast-feeding moms should pay special attention to iron and vitamin D to restore energy. Supplements such as collagen and omega-3 may also help, but always check with your doctor first.
