Feeling stressed, stuck, or simply in need of a boost? Dance might be the answer.
If Grey’ s Anatomy has taught us anything, it’ s that no problem is too big to be solved by dancing it out. And beyond helping you get over an ex, dance can do wonders for your physical and mental wellbeing.
Why dancing
Susan Sloan, a Nia Technique and movement art educator and trainer now based in Johannesburg, explains the benefits:“ Dance offers a fuller, more feel-good package,” says Susan.“ Like running, most styles of dance raise your heart rate and build cardiovascular fitness, helping with stamina, circulation, and heart health.”
Depending on the intensity, a dance class can easily fall into the same moderateto-vigorous zone as a jog –“ without the monotony of doing the same movement,” she laughs. Many dance styles also build functional strength, especially through the core, hips, and legs, while improving muscular endurance over time.
