Breakout breakdown
By Temo Mpodi
Dr Mathilda Mostert is the scientific mind behind Upenya Cosmetics. We sat down with her to better understand the skincare challenges that come with the rollercoaster of adolescence, including the usual suspects – acne and pimples.
When Dr Mathilda Mostert launched her skincare brand, Upenya Cosmetics, she was already running Precision Oil Laboratories, an analytical oil laboratory.“ I’ ve always had a deep passion for the trees and botanical richness of the South African Lowveld,” she explains. Through her research, she discovered the exceptional qualities of Marula oil.
“ It has remarkable skin compatibility, excellent nourishing properties, and is well tolerated even by sensitive or problematic skin,” she says.

As a mother of three boys, Dr Mostert became acutely aware of the skincare struggles teenagers face.“ I wanted to develop a skincare range for my sons – something effective, gentle, and sciencebased. By harnessing the proven benefits of Marula oil and combining them with the latest research on skin health, I set out to create products that truly support young skin.”
Skin changes
As Dr Mostert explains, puberty brings hormonal changes that trigger the skin to produce more oil. This excess oil can combine with dead skin cells to block pores, leading to blackheads and whiteheads.“ As a result, many teens experience oily skin, clogged pores, and breakouts – most commonly on the face, chest, shoulders, and back,” she notes.
So what’ s the difference between pimples and acne? Dr Mostert clarifies:“ A pimple is a single spot or breakout. Acne, on the other hand, is the broader skin condition that causes different types of breakouts, including blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples. The most common form is called acne vulgaris, which is the medical term for the everyday acne that many teens experience.”
Three lucky readers will win an Upenya 3-in-1 Teen Skincare Set valued at R1 150. The hamper includes: Exfoliating Cleanser, Moisturising Gel and Blemish Care.

Treatment
Finding the right treatment for pimples and acne isn’ t always straightforward. The real secret lies in discovering what works best for your skin, and keeping your routine simple and consistent. Dr Mostert advises teens to stick to the basics:“ Use a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser, and a product that helps keep pores clear and manage breakouts.”
And don’ t forget sunscreen, even in winter.“ Make sure sunscreen is applied to all exposed areas, and wear protective clothing and headgear when spending time outdoors. UV rays can still penetrate on overcast days,” she cautions.
As tempting as it may be, avoid picking at your skin and steer clear of harsh products.“ If acne is severe, painful, or causing scarring, it’ s best to see a dermatologist,” warns Dr Mostert.
Skin needs can also shift with the seasons. Some teens may require extra hydration in winter, while lighter products may be better suited for summer. The key, Dr Mostert emphasises, is balance. Don’ t overdo it.
