DANGER ZONE

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it also requires vigilance. While many symptoms are normal, there are certain warning signs, often referred to as“ red flags”, that should never be ignored. Recognising these early and seeking prompt medical care can make all the difference for both mother and baby.
Sudden cessation of baby’ s movements
As your pregnancy progresses, your baby’ s movements become more regular and noticeable. A sudden decrease or complete stop in movement may signal distress and should be assessed immediately. You have a sixth sense for a reason. Trust your instincts – if something feels off, don’ t wait.
Severe swelling with headache and blurred vision
While mild swelling can be normal, sudden and excessive swelling of the hands and feet – especially when accompanied by a persistent headache, blurred vision, or even loss of consciousness – may indicate a serious condition such as pre-eclampsia. Get to your doctor or gynea as soon as possible.
High or persistent fever
A severe or ongoing fever during pregnancy may indicate an infection that could affect both mother and baby. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent complications.
Severe abdominal pain
Persistent or worsening abdominal pain, particularly if it radiates to the shoulder or back, should never be ignored. This could point to serious underlying conditions and requires immediate medical evaluation.
Bleeding during pregnancy
Bleeding at any stage of pregnancy is not considered normal and should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional. While the cause may sometimes be minor, it can also signal complications that need prompt care.
Pregnancy can come with many new and sometimes confusing symptoms. However, these five warning signs should always prompt immediate medical attention. Early intervention can protect both mother and baby and ensure a safer pregnancy journey.
