Men’ s health
Life is busy, but it’ s no excuse not to check in on your health, because the consequences can be dire. This is especially true for men, who often delay visiting the doctor. Taking care of yourself isn’ t selfish; it’ s vital – to you and your family.
Men are often told to“ suck it up” so it’ s no surprise that studies show they pay less attention to their health than women. `
“ Men’ s health is often overlooked due to a combination of cultural, societal and behavioural factors,” explains Dr Lee Moses, Medical Advisor: Advisory Risk and Quality Management at Bestmed Medical Scheme.“ In addition, when it comes to health concerns, many men are conditioned from a young age to prioritise strength and self-reliance, which can lead to a reluctance to seek medical advice for fear of appearing‘ weak’.”
In South Africa specifically, a 2025 Movember poll revealed that up to 86 % of men skip routine health check-ups, increasing the risk of preventable illness by going undiagnosed and untreated until later stages.
Dr Moses highlights key awareness gaps:
• The value of routine screenings( blood pressure, diabetes, prostate).
• Recognising early warning signs beyond pain, such as fatigue or subtle changes.
• Understanding that regular healthcare engagement boosts longevity and quality of life.
“ By normalising health conversations and shifting societal norms around men’ s health, we can start to close these gaps,” says Dr Moses.
