Babywearing safety tips
Before you get started, check your baby’ s positioning. Sr Jordaan warns against:
• Chin-on-chest posture, which can restrict airflow
• Slumped or twisted spine, a sign that the carrier may be too loose
• Poor circulation, shown by bluish hands or feet, sweating or irritability
• Unsupported hips. Always look for that“ M” shape with knees above bum
• Never use blankets or towels as they can slip and become hazardous
Pain from babywearing?
“ A poor fit, using non-ergonomic carriers for long periods, or not switching positions can cause strain,” says Sr Jordaan. Choose carriers that spread weight across both shoulders and hips, engage your core, take breaks and mix up carrying styles throughout the day.
Sr Jordaan encourages at least some skin-to-skin in the early days.“ It offers incredible benefits for bonding, regulation, and development.”
