The idea for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association ( JPMA ) was born in 1959 as manufacturers recognized the need for an official , united voice for the growing industry in response to an automotive tax that applied to car seats . By pooling resources and streamlining efforts , the manufacturers demonstrated the tax was unfair and harmful , and it was revoked . In 1962 , the organization obtained its charter and officially became recognized as JPMA .
That year marked a turning point for the industry - and children ’ s products as we know them - and the following six decades have brought rapid innovation and significant progress in making products for the care and safety of babies and young children widely available .
Since then , JPMA has been recognized for its dedication to enhancing baby and children ’ s product safety and support for families as they care for their little ones . JPMA and its members maintain that steadfast commitment through a variety of collaborative efforts .
JPMA ’ s core initiatives 60 years ago were to build a strong trade association that represented a majority of the industry , have an influence in government affairs affecting juvenile products , and be a leader in an industry with a major safety conscience . Today , the organization stays true to those principles and is widely recognized as the voice of the industry on quality and safety .
