Interview
SC: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’ve always enjoyed reading cozy mysteries, because I love a good murder and
crime story, but I’m not a fan of slashers and gore. I don’t need the blood—I prefer
the mystery and the process of figuring things out. I like the idea of an average
person solving a crime. I know I’ll never be a detective but I like to think if a crime
happened in my neighborhood I might be able to solve it! Another aspect I bring into
my books is that I love food and I love reading about food. I am a huge fan of “Top
Chef” and I read “Food and Wine” and “Bon Appetit” magazines every month. I think
we’ve turned into a foodie nation and people enjoy reading about dishes and
recipes. I also think that the whole concept of feeding people and baking conjures up
happy and yummy thoughts, and I wanted Antonia to bring that out in readers.
SC: Was there a certain time in your life you knew you wanted to write?
I don’t remember not writing. I always kept little blue spiral notebooks and locked
myself away to write books. I come from a family of writers, English teachers,
English professors and publishers. I had one glamorous aunt who was a magazine
writer and the first woman editor at Baron’s. She started the ‘Dollars and Sense’
column in Mademoiselle Magazine and was a Contributing Editor of Spy Magazine,
in addition to writing to finance books. I thought that was so cool. Another cool aunt
was in publishing and ultimately became the Publisher and Deputy Chairman of
Hachette Publishing (formerly Time Warner.) She used to pay my sister and I to do
book reviews when we were little. So writing and books were always part of my
world.
