17. ACTIVITY NAME: Storytelling With Andrew Wright
MAIN GOAL(S): Storytelling based on mutual improvisation of the students and the teacher
KEY
GRAMMAR/
VOCABULARY
LEVEL:
TIME: Present and past tense
PREPARATION:
any level, except for beginners
25 minutes
In case you haven’t got much experience with improvising, you need a lot of
courage.
Also, you must show enthusiasm and the ability to engage students in the
activity.
PROCEDURE:
The students and the teacher together generate a story: the teacher asks
questions and students give answers:
T: Where does your story take place? S’s: In a spaceship.
T: Who is in the spaceship? S’s: A dog.
T: What does the dog look like? S’s: ………………….
T: How does the dog feel? S’s…………………….
T: Who else is in the spaceship? S’s: A flea.
T: What is the dog doing? S’s: It is reading a book.
T: What is the book about? S’s: About how to get rid of fleas.
T: What is the flea doing? S’s: It is sitting on the dog’s ear, reading the book
too.
As you can see, both parties are improvising. You can use present tense first,
later on, when the students write the story down, they can use past tense.
You can also interrupt the conversation and have the students complete the
story on their own.
Andrew Wright’s advice is not to change or correct the story, it is the
students’. Also, it is a good idea to ask about details. / Look at the sample
conversation above.
