help online. Its advantages are: the data model helps the archivist, fast description of activities and
the result is more correct and uniform. There is logical and physical structure. When we are talking
about arrangement of archives using this software, it gives opportunity to modify in every way the
tree representation, than it is possible to manage the whole work at any time, to perform automatic
arrangement of archival unit with different criteria, to manage critical and unordered situation, and
to arrange in a virtual way without doing lots of operations. Regarding the process of indexing, there
are two opportunities: simple index (based on index entries – people, Corporate bodies, places –
available in all units of description: typologies, roles and occupation) and complex index (based on
typologies of People, Corporate body, Place). What are functionalities of this operation: facilitate
detection of entries, automatic amalgamation of the same entries, lots of functionalities to support
the normalization. The main advantages are that it is possible to choose the type of index, simple o
complex, and it is possible to make complex index in a fast way. Finally, it should be underlined that
Arianna3 uses a tree r epresentation to virtually reproduce the structure of archive; moreover through
the topographic map the user can always see the physical collocation of documentation.
AriannaWeb is a tool that enables the interactive publication of archival database on the Internet.
It is software strictly related to Arianna3, but AriannaWeb can manage database produced with
several archival tools: it uses the XML/EAD standard to preserve and maintain for a long time the
documentation in a digital format. AriannaWeb is a web application created for the on-line integrated
publication of archival descriptions and images, E-gallery19, software for the fruition of artistic and
cartographical heritages on the Web to publish and consult in Internet the archival descriptions and high
resolution images, by guaranteeing any user or enterprise the possibility of preserving, valorization
and managing documentary heritages of historical archives.
AriannaWeb’s interface reproduces an archival structure, allowing a rapid navigation through
the preserved material: it presents the archival descriptions in a contextualized way, it provides rapid
researches through a “Google-like” engine and it allows the visualization of high-resolution images
associated with the archival description. Under the technological point of view the adoption of the
XML/EAD standard and the integration of the open source solution IIPImage20 for the visualization
of images, make AriannaWeb a vanguard technology for its sector.
After above-mentioned presentation in Kotor, by shown interest of experts from Montenegrin
institutions, state and church ones, which are dealing with archival, library and museum material,
we were encouraged to take on a work of translation of the software Arianna3 in the Montenegrin
language to enable its use for Montenegrin archives.
Experiences on the Montenegrin language translation of Italian software Arianna3
In order to use the Italian software to process the documents in Montenegro, it was necessary to
make its translation in Montenegrin language. Thus, a cooperation agreement was signed between the
company “Hyperborea” – Pisa and the organization “Notar” – Kotor. Essentially, this work was an
introduction of the common project of digitization that would be done in future with the provision of
some financial support.
The Montenegrin translation of the Italian software for archival sector represents an important
meeting between two different archival traditions, the Italian and the Montenegrin one, under the
technical and conceptual point of view. Under the technical point of view all the software interface
elements have been translated to allow the complete use of the Montenegrin language. Under the
conceptual point of view the way of operating and the archival concepts have been exported, examined
and used. This work also represents an important evolution for the spreading of software outside the
Italian context that was one of the goal of the company “Hyperborea” to underline Arianna3 and
AriannaWeb‘s internationalization.
According to the cooperation agreement, the translation was entrusted to me. Before I have started
with the work on the translation, it was necessary to become more familiar with the programme of
Arianna3. Thus, I spent several days in the company “Hyperborea” in Pisa. My training was done on
the program in Italian language and also description of two fonds from Kotor Archives which were
used as an example to insert, were also translated into Italian. It limited my ability to fully master the
technique of including the data and to observe all the advantages and disadvantages of the programme
when it comes to implementation in our archives.
The next phase of the work was to input all the words and sentence into Excel sheets, which was
done in “Hyperborea”. The colleagues who worked on it say it required a lot of effort and time. At the
same time, with this translation, a short version of the handbook needed to be prepared, which was
also supposed to be translated. However, only the programme in Italian language and drawn words and
sentences in Excel, in Italian and English versions was available at the beginning of the translation.
The translation in Montenegrin was generalized for many things, with the use of many synonyms.
During the work I found that the terms and phrases in the Italian version were partially or completely
different from the translation into English. So, I had to decide whether to translate the Italian text, or
the English one. However, it was difficult out of context to determine which cases, gender, plural o
singular and similar, you had to use, characteristics which are in our language very important.
