How looking back helps you move forward with clarity

As another year draws to a close, many of us feel the urge to start afresh – to set new goals, learn healthier habits or simply do things differently. But, before you rush into 2026, it’ s worth taking a moment to pause, look back and reflect. Reflection and gratitude aren’ t just end-of-year rituals, they’ re powerful tools for emotional wellbeing, self-awareness and personal growth.
The power of looking back
Reflection isn’ t about overthinking the past or reliving regrets. It’ s about recognising how far you’ ve come. When we take time to look back – honestly and kindly – we often realise just how much strength, patience and courage we’ ve shown along the way.
Think about the small victories: The challenges you overcame, the relationships that supported you, the ways you showed up for yourself or others. Even difficult moments carry lessons that shape who we are becoming.
Try asking yourself:
• What am I most proud of this year?
• What surprised me about myself?
• What moments made me feel most alive or at peace?
Writing your thoughts down in a journal or simply talking about them with someone you trust, helps turn experiences into insight. It’ s a gentle way of closing one chapter and preparing for the next.
